Pine Tree Primary received the award for “Bring Your Parent to School Day”. <div><br /></div><div> Pine Tree Primary is a Title I school-wide campus with 76% economically disadvantaged students. For many students, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten are their first learning experiences. Through an annual needs assessment, parents expressed a desire to learn how to work with their children at home. Parents had the desire to work with their children, but they did not feel confident in their abilities. </div><div><br /></div><div>Pine Tree Primary Principal, Ruthie Walker, listened to the needs of her parents and worked with campus staff to create a one-of-a-kind event.
Parents of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students were invited to the campus on the scheduled February parent conference day to engage in break-out sessions presented by teachers, Region 7 ESC staff, and district staff. The goal of the day was to provide parents opportunities to become the best learning partner for their students that they can be. Parents built their capacity as they learned side by side with their students through self-selected sessions led by teachers, Parent Liaisons, and Region 7 ESC staff. </div><div><br /></div><div>To support these efforts once they returned home, each family received a bag with reading and math activities in English and Spanish geared towards either pre-kindergarten or kindergarten. Vendors and local resource agencies were available to answer questions and support families. </div><div><br /></div><div> Pine Tree ISD received the Promising Practices award for Raising Highly Capable Kids. Through conversations with stakeholders and Title I Parent Survey, the district realized there was a need to offer resources to build capacity for parents. Getting parents to the schools and engaging them with school projects was a challenge. </div><div><br /></div><div>The Raising Highly Capable Kids project became an additional resource specifically for parents to address family structure.
The goal of the thirteen-week program was to develop better communication skills between students and parents. Each week in the series focused on developing the 40 research-based critical assets within the family. Raising Highly Capable Kids states is designed around the premise that the more developmental assets a student acquires the lower their risk for certain negative behaviors. The higher their percentage of positive behaviors the higher their chance for success. </div><div><br /></div><div>The planning and implementation for Raising Highly Capable Kids were spearheaded by Miranda Chism, Parent Liaison for Pine Tree ISD. She applied for a grant through Rezilent Kids and initiated the program for Longview, Texas. Volunteers such as teachers, administrators, and leaders in the community signed up to facilitate each week. Local sponsors assisted with providing dinner and high school students assisted with childcare. It takes many players to make a program like this a success.

Did you know the first National Red Ribbon Week was created by the National Family Partnership in 1988? The nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985. After his death, people started wearing red ribbons to honor Kiki’s sacrifice. Today, millions of people celebrate Red Ribbon Week by participating in community awareness events across the country.
Pine Tree ISD will celebrate with special theme days throughout the week of October 26-30.

The competition was an extension of an effort that started in the Spring of 2020. The spring competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Region 7ESC was kind enough to create a virtual platform that required all the teams within the region to compete using ZOOM, FlipGrid Video and Google applications. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all teams competed virtually from their home campus. The teams were required to program their robots and complete a series of tasks. Videos of their missions were uploaded and sent to Region 7ESC for scoring. Pine Tree Junior High swept the awards. Congratulations to our PT Pirates!
