Pine Tree Students Explore Hour of Code

Students at Pine Tree Birch Elementary, Parkway Elementary and Pine Tree Middle School participated in Hour of Code during the official week of December 5-11.

The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in over 180 countries.

The event is put on by code.org which is a nonprofit group dedicated to expanding access to computer science and increasing participation by women and underrepresented minorities.

4th Grade students at Parkway Elementary learned how to code this week. Coding is used to help students eventually learn how to make their own apps and games.

PT Middle School students learned what it takes to create different APPS that they use everyday from games to social media. Another module included Minecraft where learners of all ages get an introductory experience with coding and computer science in a safe, supportive environment.

Birch Elementary students explored Hour of Code during Coding Club. Students were very excited about this new learning opportunity as evidenced by the following quotes:

"I love to do coding. It is so fun! I did not know I liked coding at all until I did it today"

"I liked it when I built a house and sheared the sheep and chopped the trees down and finally explore the creepers."

"I love coding because it puts fun into learning. If you never have tried coding, try it someday - you will like it!

"Coding was so cool! We got to code chickens, Steve, and even play Flappy Bird. At the end of each stage, you get to sue anything you have learned and make something random. On the Minecraft, you get to build mines and tell chickens to do random things. On the Flappy Bird, you get to tall Flappy Bird to make a noise when he does something like hit a pole. There are different backgrounds and birds."
